PROGRAM DEVELOPMENT101
or what a funder is likely to ask about your program

Basic Information:

  • What will this program do?
  • Who will be served?
  • Why is the program needed or important?
  • How does this program differ from other programs  in the community?
  • How much will the program cost?
  • Where does this program fit into other
    organizational or community programs?

Additional Information:

  • Who will manage this program?
  • What are the qualifications of individuals who will manage the program?
         - If existing staff is involved, have copies of their resumes.
         - If positions are new, have job descriptions.
  • Who would be interested in funding this type of program:
         - Government- City, State and/or Federal
         - Individuals
         - Corporations
         - Foundations
         - Other organizations; i.e. public charities, civic groups
  • What will happen if this program isn’t created?
  • Who in the community supports the program?
         - Letters of support and/or letters from collaborators
         - Confirmation of need

         - Numbers of individuals to be served
         - Demographic and geographic information about population to be served

Program Evaluation:

A key element of most grant applications is program evaluation—this is an often overlooked element that comes back to haunt organizations when funders request reports.  To avoid problems if grant writing is successful — have program staff provide realistic information about program evaluation activities before funding proposals are submitted.

Future Funding:

Another frequently asked question is: “Where else will you seek funding support or where will you seek additional support once the requested funding ceases?”

  • Careful, thoughtful research up front will help you demonstrate to funders that you are serious about the future of the program.
  • If future funding for your program will be from generated program fees—be prepared to describe those fees.
  • If you plan to build the program into ongoing requests from government sources—be prepared to name those sources.
  • Funders are savvy folks who COMMUNICATE with each other.  Don’t make up information.  It could come back to haunt you later!
