Leona Marie Emily Raillard Kohlhass was born June 24, 1907, in Gallup, Territory of New Mexico. Her father worked for the Santa Fe Railroad and her grandmother owned a French restaurant and bakery and later, a millinery shop.

Following her graduation from high school at the age of 14, Leona attended business school while working as a bookkeeper. Then in 1924 she enrolled at The University of New Mexico, graduating with a BA in History in 1928 when the school's student population totaled 500.

Leona worked as a secretary to UNM President Dr. James F. Zimmerman until her marriage to Lew Kohlhaas that took place in the president's home in 1933.

Lewis Otto Kohlhaas was born in Philadelphia at 1903 and went to work at the age of 14 to help support the family when his father was confined to a tuberculosis sanitarium. He moved to Albuquerque in 1928 where he became a manufacturer's representative and traveled throughout the state at the time when there were only 60 miles of paved highway. Every weekend he had to tighten all of the car bolts that had become loose during his week's travels!

In 1946, Lew founded Kohlhaas Tank and Equipment Company that manufactured and distributed steel storage tanks and equipment used in petroleum marketing. Lew continued to work full time until his death in 1987 at age 84.

Leona and Lew raised four children in Albuquerque: Virginia, Richard, Marilyn and Charles. They have 12 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren. Leona has been active with Church Women United and the Albuquerque Advisory Board. Lew served as a board member of the American Lung Association.

The Albuquerque Community foundation is pleased to assist the Kohlhaas family in achieving their philanthropic goals through The Lewis O. and Leona R. Kohlhaas Endowment Fund.  Over the years to come, the family's generosity will contribute to grants to nonprofit organizations addressing community needs.

Donors: The Sivley Family

The SivleysT.J. and Mary Ray sivley moved from Oklahoma to Artesia, New Mexico.in 1938, where they started a successful business, raised two children and were active in the business and civic life of the community.

The Sivleys cared little for material possessions, but felt strongly about charitable causes. Because they had lived through the Great Depression, they were deeply sympathetic to hardship.

When the time came to plan their estate, they wanted to provide financial support for the causes they had supported all their lives and still provide for their children with a secure future.

The Sivleys; attorney drew up a charitable annuity lead trust. Albuquerque Community Foundation receives income for ten years, and the Sivley children then receive trust assets.

The T.J. And Mary Ray Sivley Endowment Fund, with advice from the Sivleys' daughter, makes grants to address T.J.'s and Mary's interests: public television, museums, animal welfare, environmental reservation, and assistance to their longtime hometown, Artesia.

Donor: Mrs. Clinton P. Anderson

Mrs. Clinton P. AndersonHenrietta Anderson was a gracious lady and hostess known for her love of animals, gardening, and the arts. Her husband, Senator Clinton P. Anderson, was one of New Mexico’s most respected political figures with a career marked by landmark conservation, agriculture and health care legislation.

With foresight and compassion for her community, Mrs. Anderson was a founding donor to the charitable endowment of the Albuquerque Community Foundation in 1984. When the time came to plan her estate, Henrietta Anderson established two endowment funds to perpetuate her family’s many charitable interests.

The Mrs. Clinton P. Anderson Unrestricted Endowment Fund has provided grants to all of the Foundation’s fields of interest. Grants provided by the Mrs. Clinton P. Anderson Endowment Fund in Health and Human Services provides support for direct services to people in need and for the promotion of health and well-being.

Mrs. Anderson’s legacy and philanthropic vision will continue to carry out her philanthropic vision.

Donor: Emanuel Blaugrund

Emanuel Blaugrund came to Albuquerque in 1936 and opened his first American Home Furnishings store in downtown Albuquerque. It quickly grew into New Mexico’s largest home furnishings store.

Along with success came Mr. Blaugrund’s recognition of the importance of supporting community issues and organizations. The family’s dedication to the Albuquerque community has a long history.

Originally establishing a private foundation, the family set a precedent in 1995 when they transferred their foundation assets to a donor-advised fund at Albuquerque Community Foundation. This advised fund allows the family complete flexibility when choosing their annual grant recipients. Each year family members are able to assess the community’s most important needs and grant their dollars accordingly.

Donor: Ida Mae Cowan

Ida May CowenKnown for her independent spirit and generosity, Ida Mae Cowan was admired by all who knew her. As the oldest child of seven, she grew up sewing clothes for her siblings and later worked in a dry goods store. Her top priority in life was to help the less fortunate: the homeless, sick, indigent, hungry and orphaned.

Born in 1896, Mrs. Cowan was a longtime resident of New Mexico until her death in 1990 at the age of 94. Prior to her death she established a donor-designated fund, the Ida Mae Cowan Fund for the Homeless at Little Brothers of the Good Shepherd. She chose Little Brothers of the Good Shepherd because of her personal knowledge of their work in providing aid for the homeless.

Mrs. Cowan’s fund has nearly doubled since it was established and continues to distribute grants annually to provide services to the homeless of Albuquerque.
