Grants to Help the Most Vulnerable
   Donor: Wilhelmina Neat Coe

Wilhelmina Neat Coe, who died in 1970, had impassioned feelings about her community and was very generous, ultimately leaving over seven million dollars to the community that was distributed through a thorough and lengthy process to 34 nonprofit organizations. ACF received over one million dollars to establish a fund for health and human services programs to address Mrs. Coe’s over-riding concern for people who can not do for themselves. Annual grants have been made to nonprofit organizations helping the homeless, children and families in need, people with physical or developmental disabilities and those with alcoholism and drug addiction. Mrs. Coe believed in giving people an opportunity to gain self-sufficiency.

The Wilhelmina Neat Coe, Peace Foundation’57 for Health & Human Services Fund has provided grant funding of almost $200,000 since the fund was established in 1999. Organizations receiving funding include New Mexico Teen Pregnancy Coalition for the Young Fathers Project, Catholic Charities, Dismas House, Meals on Wheels, Barrett Foundation, Health Care for the Homeless, and Youth Development, Inc.

Two grants of $21,000 each were made in 2003: Adelante Development Center for the Friends in Time Program providing hands-on direct care for people with multiple sclerosis (MS) or amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) and a grant to PB&J Family Services, Inc. providing special support services for parents in the Supported Living Program for people with developmental disabilities & their children with or without disabilities.

In 2004, grants were made to Albuquerque Mental Health Housing Coalition for $15,000 to expand services; New Mexico Voices for Children’s Community Health Partnerships program for $20,000 and YouthBuild New Mexico for $15,000 to assist students in pursuing their GED.
