ACF FOUNDERS AWARD 2006
No person was ever honored for what he received. Honor has been the reward for what he gave.
- Calvin Coolidge (1872-1933)
This award is presented to honor individuals who have been major supporters of The Albuquerque Community Foundation and have made a significant difference in the community through their charitable contributions and work.
This year’s award is given to The Junior League of Albuquerque.
The Junior League was instrumental in the founding of ACF. In 1979, Junior League members attended a grant writing workshop where the speaker happened to mention Community Foundation’s being founded in other cities. Excited by the concept, the League decided to elicit the support of the United Way to help found a local community foundation. Simultaneously, several local business men were also researching the idea. The three partnered in establishing the Albuquerque Community Foundation in 1981. In 1984, the Junior League established the Junior League Enabling Fund with $35,000 to promote volunteerism. Since then the fund has grown to $145,000. Each year, the past president of JLA serves on the Board of Trustees of the Community Foundation.
