The Performing Arts Endowment Fund
The Performing Arts Endowment Fund was established in 1988 to provide funding for performing arts programming. Since then, grants have supported community and student theater; ballet, flamenco and contemporary dance; and symphonic, jazz and traditional New Mexico music.
Grants awarded in 2003 supported:
National Dance Institute of New Mexico, an academic-enhancing dance program at Mission Elementary School.
Panjea Foundation for Cultural Education, an African heritage program for youth teaching contemporary dance and drumming at the Thomas Bell Community Center.
Readymade Dance Company for a collaborative development of a theatre piece, "Sign," to explore sign language and communicative qualities of the hand.
A recent grant from this fund supported a new nonprofit organization, Sweet Bird Classics, to present Sol y Canto, an award winning group of young Latin musicians including Albuquerque native Brian Mador in a series of educational, bilingual programs exploring the wider world-view of Latin music made up of distinct cultural entities. Part of this 'Roots of Latin Music' project included Sol y Canto in residency with two music class at Valley High School. Following the residency, Sol y Canto performed live on KUNM and recorded a series of radio programs for KUNM for airing later this year.
