The Mediation Fund
The Mediation Fund provides grants for programs that encourage an alternative to violence by teaching conflict resolution and communications skills. Since 1986, this fund has provided grant funding to public schools and nonprofit organizations for youth and community mediation programs, mediator training, and conflict resolution skills.
In 2002 and 2003 grants from the Mediation Fund supported school mediation
services for suspension, attendance, and truancy issues for Rio Rancho and Bernalillo Public Schools and Washington Middle School in the Albuquerque Public School system.
A $3,000 grant to New Mexico Advocates for Children & Families supported the Albuquerque Youth Peace and Prevention Institute held for three days in October 2000. Sessions at the Institute helped youth recognize choices, make commitments from choice and move into action from a place of commitment. Following the Institute, a group of participants formed the Albuquerque Youth Peace Team to continue work with nonviolence issues and are in the process of planning public and school activities. Young people benefit from the hands-on intensive multi-year training program exclusively co-designed by and for youth. The Institute began with the expectation that youth are competent and willing to be a changing force.
