Arts and Culture

Grants in this area are given to help facilitate the growth and stability of arts organizations, to encourage the preservation of the community’s cultural heritage, and to recognize unique artistic achievement:

Albuquerque Health Care for the Homeless
Art therapist & homeless artists' honoraria for ArtStreet program supporting homeless children & adults, $4,000

Albuquerque Youth Symphony Program
Workshop classes to improve technical skills & musicianship for middle school students in the Bach to Basics weeklong music camp, $5,000

Art in the School, Inc.
Multicultural art education project for elementary school students, in collaboration with the Maxwell Museum, entitled 'Three Generations of Pueblo Painters: Pablita Velarde, Helen Hardin, & Margarete Bagshaw Tindel,' $5,000

Arts Alliance
Educational & informational materials for a sustainable funding for the arts initiative to support Albuquerque's cultural institutions & nonprofit arts organizations, $5,000

Crisol Bufons
Performances of an original bilingual children's play, a traditional Iberian folk tale to teach Spanish language & appreciation of Hispanic culture in APS elementary schools, $5,000

Escuela del Sol Montessori School
Afterschool art program support for the Harwood Art Center & Wells Park Community Center collaborative for at-risk youth, $2,000

National Dance Institute of New Mexico
Academic-enhancing dance program at Mission Avenue Elementary School, $5,000

New Mexico Symphony Orchestra
Fifth Grade Initiative Program allowing thousands of elementary school children to experience an entire orchestra performance at Popejoy Hall, $5,000

Artistic costs for live music & other performing arts presentations for people in shelters, nursing homes, treatment & correctional facilities in Albuquerque, $2,500

Panjea Foundation for Cultural Education
African heritage program for youth at Thomas Bell Community Center teaching contemporary dancing & drumming, $4,500

Readymade Dance Theater Co.
Collaborative development of a theatre piece, "Sign," to explore sign language & the communicative qualities of the hand, $4,000

Senior Arts, Inc.
Exhibition of seniors' artwork at the South Broadway Cultural Center, $2,000

Sweet Bird Classics
Two Boombox Classroom radio programs of professional, standards-based music lessons for K-8, $5,000

VSA arts of New Mexico
Matching grant support for AmeriCorps School Residency Program, for young adults to work in arts education program with adults with mixed abilities & APS elementary & high school students, $3,000

In the field of education, grants support a wide range of activities from early childhood through adult programs including special education, vocational and career training, and classroom innovation:

For training & support to prevent violence by teaching conflict resolution in 'Mediation in the Schools Program,' $1,500

APS Title I, Homeless Projects
Volunteer coordinator for the after-school & summer tutoring program for homeless children, $3,000

Camp Fire Boys & Girls
Rocket Reading Program for volunteer tutors teaching reading skills to first grade students, $5,000

Direct Action for Youth Foundation
Stipends for APS elementary school teachers to tutor at-risk students from their classroom after school, $5,000

El Rancho de las Golondrinas
Living History Museum educational outreach programs for Spanish Colonial Days attended by more than 15,000 New Mexico children and teachers, $5,000

Junior Achievement of New Mexico
Volunteer-taught economic education program for Reginald Chavez Elementary School, $5,000

Mediation Services of New Mexico
School mediation services for suspension, attendance and truancy issues for Rio Rancho & Bernalillo Public Schools & Washington Middle School, $5,000

New Mexico Holocaust & Intolerance Museum
Educational programs to teach tolerance & respect for school children, teacher & the general public, $4,500

Oasis, Inc.
Intergenerational tutoring program pairing senior volunteers with elementary school children having difficulty learning to read, $4,000

South Valley Academy
Literacy Crew, freshman students serving as reading tutors for struggling elementary school students, $4,500

The University of New Mexico
Accelerated-Enrichment Program at UNM's Valencia campus for at-risk youth in Belen, Isleta & Los Lunas public schools providing opportunities to participate in educational & cultural activities not normally included in their schools' curriculum, $4,800

TVI Foundation
'Tax Help Program' for low income elderly residents in the South Valley for free tax preparation assistance from TVI students, $5,000

YWCA Middle Rio Grande
Racial Justice Program providing promotional print materials for a cultural competency training program for community leaders, $3,000

Nancy Thompson Harris Award for Excellence in Teaching Literature, Judith Garner, Del Norte High School, $2,000

Environmental and Historic Preservation

Grants in the field of environmental and historic preservation help to preserve historic resources, conserve the natural land, protect wildlife, and provide environmental education:

Albuquerque Little Theatre
Fabrication of steel railings from the original John Gaw Meem designs for renovation project including railings for ADA seating areas, $3,500

Albuquerque Tree Initiative
A collaborative project with the City of Albuquerque to purchase & plant trees in city parks, medians & other public places, $5,000

Bosque School
Program for private & public school students to monitor the bosque ecosystem in collaboration with UNM & US Corps of Engineers, $3,500

Cornerstones Community Partnership
Workshop for Hubbell House volunteers on traditional mud plastering techniques & how to organize community workdays, $4,500

New Mexico Friends of the Forest
Production of a 200-page field guide to the Sandia Mountains for volunteers & visitors including school children on field trips, $4,000

SPOTS in New Mexico, Inc.
Animal spay & neuter program specifically designed for lower-income households, $5,000

Sustain Ability Trust
Community courses about water water harvesting, grey water, water recycling, water consumption & monitoring the Rio Grande, $5,000

Grants in the fields of health and human services provide support for direct services to people in need and for the promotion of health and well-being:

Adelante Development Center
The Friends in Time Program providing hands-on direct care for people with multiple sclerosis (MS) or amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), $21,000

Albuquerque Rape Crisis Center
A public awareness campaign for the media about crisis intervention services, $4,000

Angel Flight West
To continue outreach program for volunteer pilots & educational program on the referral system for the healthcare community, $5,000

APS Title I Homeless Projects
Volunteer-supported after-school program for homeless children, $2,000

Barrett Foundation
Bridges to Self-Sufficiency, a supportive transitional housing program for homeless women & their children, $2,600

Catholic Charities of Central New Mexico
Housing for families facing evictions through the courts, $5,000

Community Clotheshorse
Program support for job-interview clothing & one-on-one mentoring for low income women entering the workforce, $3,000

Dismas House
Expansion of transitional living program housing for men transitioning from incarceration, $5,000

Enlace Comunitario
Legal assistance & advocacy support for Spanish-speaking immigrant women & their children who have been victims of domestic violence, $4,000

Human Rights Advocacy, Inc.
Jail-based education & empowerment program for street prostitutes to work & live independently upon release, $5,000

Independent Living Resource Center
Equipment for the Personal Care Option Program, a consumer-directed service for people with disabilities and the elderly, $4,000

Interfaith Hospitality
A network program of the faith community to assist homeless individuals & families obtain permanent housing, $2,000

Los Reyes de Alburquerque Foundation
Music Enhancement Program of traditional Hispanic music presentations for senior centers, nursing homes & day care centers, $3,000

New Mexico Teen Pregnancy Coalition
Employment training program for young men in the New Mexico Young Fathers Project, $6,000

Pegasus Legal Services for Children
Domestic violence training project to develop educational materials teaching teens how to use the Family Violence Prevention Act as a legal tool to prevent more violence, $1,500

PB&J Family Services, Inc.
Special support services for parents in the Supported Living Program for people with developmental disabilities & their children with or without disabilities, $21,000

Project Share, Inc.
Meal service expansion from five to seven nights a week for people who are homeless & the working poor, $5,000

Rio Grande Food Project
Construction of a ramp for easier access to the food bank, $2,000

Roadrunner Food Bank
'Food for Kids' program to send food home from schools for children who do not get enough to eat at home, $5,000

Sandia Preparatory School and APS Mission Avenue Elementary School
'Niños y Libros' mentoring program between 8th grade Sandia Prep students and APS K-5 students, $3,000

St. Martin's Hospitality Center
Transportation, medication support, employment & housing support for individuals & families coming out of homelessness, $4,000

Support for recreational and education activities at Camp Enchantment for children with cancer & their siblings, $5,000

Amigos de Las Americas
Community service learning project for student volunteers in partnership with New Mexico Voices for Children to initiate a health education project in the Southeast Heights, $4,600

Animal Humane Association
Project Second Chance for young men in custody to train less-than-adoptable dogs to prepare for future adoption, $4,000

Cuidando Los Niños
Children's program for homeless children, $5,000

La Familia Placement Services
Support for foster children ages 16-18 who will be leaving foster care & their existing resources to learn skills & develop community connections, $5,000

Planned Parenthood of New Mexico
Adolescent Pregnancy Prevention Program for presentations in mid/high Schools, $5,000
