Step 2B: Guidelines for Faith-based Organizations

Grants from the Foundation’s Competitive Grant Program are not made for religious purposes but are often made to faith-based organizations for the non-religious programs offered to the broader community.

Below are some general guidelines to assist your agency in determining its eligibility to receive a grant through the Foundation’s Competitive Grant Program.

Characteristics of eligible programs:

  • May be located in a house of worship;
  • May use the same room, but not at the same time for religious and non-religious programs
  • Religious programs are separated from non-religious programs
  • Are open to all, regardless of religious affiliation
  • Abstain from religious worship, instruction, or proselytization (recruitment)
  • Eliminate required statements of belief from participants

Descriptions of previously funded programs include:

  • Food pantry operated out of a church
  • Shelters and transitional housing
  • ESL classes
  • Classical music series
  • Drug and alcohol counseling services
  • Educational health workshops
