Grant Stories
Martineztown House of Neighborly Service
They have provided services for 60 years to the low-income families of the historic Martineztown area adjacent to downtown Albuquerque.
One grant to Martineztown House allowed 100 underserved elementary-age children to participate in a gardening project. Growing, harvesting, experiencing the outdoors, composting, and conservation were taught during the project. An important side benefit was that the children also learned about the nutritious fruits and vegetables that should be a part of a healthy diet.
A grant from the Hugh & Helen Woodward Fund to Martineztown House funds three programs that focus on literacy. Thirty-five children ages 3-5 participate in the bilingual, pre-literacy preschool program each morning. An afterschool program assists thirty five children ages 6-12 by providing bilingual tutoring and mentoring. Grant funding also supports a program to promote ongoing literacy skill development to reduce what is typically lost over the summer months.
