Kellogg Foundation Awards $400,000

Lt. Governor Diane Denish announced today that the Kellogg Foundation has awarded $400,000 to establish the New Mexico Office of Philanthropic Outreach in response to a proposal from the Lt. Governor’s Children’s Cabinet and the Albuquerque Community Foundation.

“The grant awarded by the Kellogg Foundation to establish the Office of Philanthropic Outreach could not come to the state at a better time.  In this time of economic challenges the work of this new office is vital.  The Office of Philanthropic Outreach will identify innovative funding partnerships that can be leveraged to fill shortfalls in services to New Mexico’s families. This office will emphasize attracting new national grants and federal dollars to New Mexico,” Lt. Governor Denish stated.  “This builds upon the important work that the Community Foundation is doing with the New Mexico Collaboration to End Hunger – a partnership of 57 organizations statewide with support from the State of New Mexico, the New Mexico Community Foundation, the McCune Foundation, and PNM Resources Foundation to address hunger in New Mexico.”

“The Community Foundation recognizes the importance of collaborating, and its necessity in attracting out-of-state funds to New Mexico.  With two other active collaborations in progress at the Foundation right now, we have learned the value of combining the individual expertise of several organizations to best achieve a goal,” said Randy Royster, Community Foundation Executive Director.

“While there are 72,000 grant making foundations nationwide, New Mexico is home to only 0.3% of those foundations.   The need to bring outside funding to our state is vital to address our social problems, such as the number of children living in poverty and teen birth rate to name just a few,” Lt. Governor Denish noted.

“The best approach for meeting our community’s growing needs,” said Vic Chavez, Board President of the Community Foundation, “is for nonprofits across the state to realize the importance of collaborating not only with each other, but also with foundations and the government in an effort to maximize charitable dollars.”

“I’m excited about the opportunities the Kellogg grant will offer to our state in leveraging other national foundation grants to New Mexico,” stated Diane Harrison Ogawa, President-Elect of the Community Foundation.  “Ultimately, no one will benefit more than the underserved population of our state.” The Office of Philanthropic Outreach's main objective is to leverage the resources of all sectors to create unparalleled impact in New Mexico. This includes reaching our most vulnerable communities through the creation of an underlying system that supports the economic and social viability of all New Mexico residents.

The Office of Philanthropic Outreach will ensure a coordinated effort among state, local and national foundations and non-profit organizations.  The office will build upon past public/private partnerships.  For example, the Elev8 program to support the expansion of school based health centers and other services at middle schools statewide is the result of a partnership among the state, Atlantic Philanthropies and the New Mexico Community Foundation.

The W.K. Kellogg Foundation was established in 1930.  The organization supports children, families and communities as they strengthen and create conditions that propel vulnerable children to achieve success as individuals and as contributors to the larger community and society.  Grants are concentrated in the United States, Latin America and the Caribbean, and the southern African countries of Botswana, Lesotho, Malawi, Mozambique, South Africa, Swaziland and Zimbabwe.  For further information, please visit the Foundation’s website at http://www.wkkf.org.
